Think Tanks

A think tank is an organization comprised of interdisciplinary scholars who perform research on various issues, policies or ideas. They discuss and review literature, provide and analyze ideas, and provide arguments to address specific problems. Think tanks address multiple issues such as policies, strategies, technology and culture. They can sometimes be referred to as policy institutes or think factories. Think tanks are created to conduct scholarly research, generate ideas, monitor public policies, and gather different opinions. They work for the common good and educate the public on specific concepts. Think tanks collect the expertise of professionals from related fields, legitimize their findings and share them through conferences, seminars and publications (Aly, 2019).

There are several influential think tanks in the US. The Belfer Center for Science and International Affairs was established to analyze nuclear threats, climate change, global and economic affairs, cybercrime, science and technology, and arms control (Hernandez, 2018). The Earth Institute was established to research climate, agriculture, global health, water, urbanization, hazards, and ecosystems. The Heritage Foundation was established to analyze federal spending, debt, entitlement programs and revenue.

Think tanks use various methods to enhance innovation. Combine ideas involves merging two ideas and methods into a single efficient output. In a problem-solving session, the group brainstorms possible approaches, prioritizes, evaluates and establishes a plan that will be implemented. The Combine ideas method identifies intersections among ideas and determines how they can be merged, understanding that combining ideas leads to the generation of the best possible idea. Think Backward involves defining a desirable future and working backwards to identify programs and policies that can connect the present and the future. McDonald’s company uses the Think Backward method to determine the intended product first and then work towards developing the intended product (Lewis, 2019). Do Rapid Prototyping involves presenting new prototypes over a short period to clients, investors or board members to enable them to understand and approve a product or feature. Take it online effectively uses brainstorming by remotely obtaining innovative ideas among think tankers concerning the subject matter.
