Invention of the Tablet

Did you know Microsoft invented the tablet a decade before Apple? In 2001, Bill Gates predicted that the Microsoft tablet would be the most popular PC sold in the US by 2006 (Ackerman, 2012). However, the tablet failed to take off. The major issue was that Microsoft intended the tablet to replace the desktop and customers to use it as their main computer. An operating system similar to that used in PCs was installed in the tablet and priced it at around $2000. Ten years later, Apple developed its tablet, installed a different operating system, and made it thinner and lighter. Apple changed the tablet's design since they knew they could not replace the computer, but it could only be an additional product. Bill Gates once said Apple did better in some of the tablet's features. Apple's timing, engineering, and packaging were much better than Microsoft's. The initial tablets produced by Microsoft were thicker and less attractive.

A sociotechnical plan is expected to facilitate collaboration between people and technology. It attempts to combine an organization's social and technical aspects to inspire development. Microsoft failed to develop an effective sociotechnical plan to determine how their technology could influence the social lives of their customers. Microsoft should have focused on the market to determine what it wanted and how the technology could be used. Microsoft thought the people wanted a replacement for computers. The company should have developed the tablet as a secondary product that customers could utilize for their needs. An attractive appearance of the product was also important to customers. My sociotechnical plan focuses on absolute connectivity through the internet of things (IoT). My sociotechnical plan addresses the development of embedded devices that effectively collect and transmit data. IoT is still under development and will continue growing to develop a smarter world.

Technological forces influence my sociotechnical plan. Technology should quickly develop to provide better connectivity and internet speeds for IoT devices. Organizations should also update their technical infrastructure and train their employees to take advantage of the latest technology. Social forces influence the sociotechnical plan because people should also be willing to use the new technology. There have been concerns about privacy intrusion, and organizations should thus educate people on the latest technology and improve the security of IoT devices.
