Lessons Learned

I learned about smart cities while pursuing this course. Learning about smart cities broadened my mind and enabled me to imagine a self-governed smart city. The rapid development in technology has led to the quick growth of the internet of things (IoT) (Wortmann & Flüchter, 2015). It has enabled faster connections, easier collaboration and easier data management. Self-governance will enable smart city citizens to collect and analyse data to achieve better governance. IoT has made it easier to collaborate with machines. Self-governed smart cities are the future and will develop surprisingly soon.

Participating in discussions was very important for me in this course because it enabled me to view the perspectives of my classmates on various topics. Reading their discussion posts enhanced my understanding of the research topic, thereby clarifying most of the areas I struggled with. My classmates' responses to my posts also enabled me to get different ideas, thus enabling me to improve my dissertation.

IoT is still developing, and I expect to see more integration in smart cities. Smart city citizens will be able to perform routine tasks such as mowing the lawn, taking out the trash and cleaning their houses through smart machines. However, such technological advancements can also be harmful. Smart machines will replace human labor leading to joblessness.
